Google Gemini for Android Review: Google’s AI Assistant Finally Feels Useful

Google Assistant was fine at timers and terrible at everything else. Google Gemini is what replaced it on most Android phones in 2025, and it’s the first Google AI product that feels like something you’d actually reach for. This Google Gemini Android review is about what it does well, what it still fumbles, and whether to pin it as your default assistant.

What Gemini actually is

Gemini is Google’s answer to ChatGPT — an AI you can chat with, ask for writing, use as a research helper, or point at a photo and get answers about it. On Android it also serves as the phone’s default assistant, replacing the old “OK Google” wake word behavior with a full conversational AI.

The features that actually change how you use your phone

Long-press the power button (or say “Hey Google”) and Gemini opens as an overlay on whatever app you’re using. From there you can ask about what’s on screen — summarize this email, translate this menu photo, explain this news article. That “overlay while doing something else” behavior is genuinely useful in a way Assistant never was.

Image input is the sleeper feature. Point the camera at a plant and ask what it is. Photograph a math problem and get a walkthrough. Screenshot a chart and ask what it means. Multimodal input is where Gemini feels like a step beyond a text-only chatbot.

Where it beats ChatGPT for Android users

Integration with Google apps. “Draft a reply to Sara’s last email in a friendly tone” — Gemini can read your Gmail and write a reply directly. “Find the receipt from Amazon last month” — Gemini searches your Drive and inbox. “What’s on my calendar tomorrow?” — real answer from your Calendar, not a made-up guess. ChatGPT can’t do any of this without third-party plugins that most people don’t set up.

Where it’s still worse than ChatGPT

Creative writing quality is a notch below GPT-4/Claude for anything long-form. Code generation is decent but not the best available. Following complex multi-step instructions is spotty — Gemini sometimes forgets the earlier parts of your request. If you’re using AI mainly for writing or coding, ChatGPT or Claude is still stronger.

The free tier vs Gemini Advanced

Free Gemini uses the smaller Gemini Flash model. It’s fast and fine for everyday questions. Gemini Advanced ($20/month, part of Google One AI Premium) unlocks the larger Gemini Pro model, deeper integration with Docs and Gmail, and more context (you can paste in longer documents). It also bundles 2TB of Google storage, which if you were going to buy anyway makes the AI portion effectively half price.

Honest recommendation: try free for a month. If you find yourself using it daily for real tasks, upgrade. Otherwise stay free.

Setting it as your default assistant

Settings → Apps → Default apps → Digital assistant app → Gemini. Once set, long-press the power button (or corner-swipe) opens Gemini instead of Assistant. You can undo this at any time.

Warning: some old Assistant features don’t work in Gemini yet. Broadcasting to Nest speakers, some smart home routines, and certain quick voice commands still route through Assistant. Gemini asks “would you like me to hand this off to Assistant?” for those. It’s a rough edge.

Privacy — the real one

Google keeps your Gemini conversations for up to 3 years unless you turn off “Gemini Apps Activity” in your account settings. Some conversations are reviewed by humans for quality improvement (Google says they don’t tie them to your account, but they’re on Google’s servers). If you type anything sensitive into Gemini — health details, financial info, work secrets — assume Google has a copy.

Turn off Gemini Apps Activity in Google Account settings if this matters to you. The AI still works, it just doesn’t remember previous chats.

Should you use Google Gemini?

Yes if you’re already deep in Google’s ecosystem — Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs. The integration alone makes it more useful for you than any other AI, free or paid. Also yes if you want a proper assistant replacement — Assistant is on borrowed time and Gemini is what’s replacing it. Stay free unless you write for a living. And if you type anything sensitive, turn off activity history first.
